I’m an ENTP and have been a musician for over 30 years. I’ve found that personality type has a strong impact on musical style; in particular, ENTPs are highly likely to be improvisational players, as opposed to being focused on faithful reproduction. One major trait of ENTP musicians is that we never play a song the same way more than once.

I just picked up a new microphone that I wanted to take for a quick test drive. I had no idea what I was about to play, and I simply hit record and started playing. Here’s a 60 second clip of pure Extraverted Intuition flow. It is an odd thing to hear a song being “written” in real-time, even for the person playing it.

So, for you musicians out there, what role do you think your type has on your playing style?
